St Thomas is a dynamic community of people who are committed to living out the practicalities of the Christian Faith in continuity with the Tradition of the Episcopal Church. That Tradition is both Evangelical—focused on hearing and responding to the Word of God—and Catholic—focused on the Sacramental Life of the Body of Christ handed down through the historic Church. Both by Word and Sacrament, we seek to live as authentic disciples of Jesus, here where God has put us.The chief duty and ministry of the parish is Sunday Mass--a spoken service offered at 8 AM and a Sung Celebration offered at 10 AM. In order to foster the richest worship of which we are capable, the parish has the able assistance of a volunteer choir and a choirmaster and organist of exceptional excellence, a guild of Lay Eucharistic Ministers, a group of lectors who read the lessons, and a guild of women who care for the altar and its furnishings. Since 2003 we have also offered a Mass in Spanish at 12:30 PM, and are developing a new worship style suited to the Spanish music.
The Pastor of the Parish is The Rev’d Canon John E. Schramm, who has been Rector and Pastor since 1982. (shown here with The Right Reverend Lloyd Allen, Bishop of Honduras, at Bp Allen's consecration in San Pedro Sula in October of 2001.) There is a full complement of Christian Education programs for all ages, including Sunday School for children and several different adult study, prayer and formation groups. Orientation to membership and participation is given through the Parish Basic Course, built around the Christian Life Model developed by The Rev’d Robert Gallagher in Power from on High. If you are interested in joining, please refer to the email instructions on the sermon page. Most of the other educational offerings are in recess during the summer. A Women's Bible Study group meets every Tuesday morning at 10:30. Most Wednesday evenings during the year there is a study group after Mass at 7 PM with varied topics. The Parish has supported a missionary in Honduras since 1990, and is currently associated with Barbara Boghetich, who serves the Lord in the Church of San Lucas, Delicias del Norte--not far from San Pedro Sula. St Thomas has been deeply involved our Diocesan companion relationship committee, Companeros en Cristo, since 1997, which was developed to involve the whole diocese in the mission and work of the Diocese of Honduras. The Parish of St Thomas has raised funds to build three churches: San Mateo in El Cerron (including a vicarage and parish house there), San Matias in La Laguna, and Santo Tomás, in Pozo Azul. We have also assisted with hurricane relief after Mitch, as well as particular needs from time to time. In January of 2005, a parish team went to Honduras to work with the day care project, Los Amiguitos de Jesus in Villanueva. In 2010 Fr John went with a diocesan group to work in Delicias del Norte and to dedicate a new water purification plant.
The Women’s Prayer Group meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday afternoons at 4:30 in order to carry on a ministry of intercession.A Caring Committee oversees the ministry to parishioners in need, and is looking always for creative ways for the members of the parish to serve each other.A group of Lay Eucharistic Visitors heads our ministry to the sick and shut-in.
